Anal fistulas result from the obstruction of an anal gland’s duct, leading to bacterial accumulation, abscess formation, and the development of a fibrous tract connecting its internal opening to the skin surface. Usually, secretion of the glands is drained internally into the rectum, but obstruction impedes the drainage, causing the following symptoms:

• Recurrent anal abscesses
• Pain and swelling around the anus
• Presence of blood or foul-smelling discharge (pus) around the anus; pain may temporarily decrease after pus drainage
• Skin irritation around the anus due to pus soiling
• Pain during bowel movements
• Fever, chills, and fatigue. Patients experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Anal fistulas are chronic conditions that do not resolve on their own and require surgical treatment. Today, several surgical techniques are available.
